Literature Text

(written in Sol's perspective)

The day had only just begun, and I had already been introduced to a new world. My sister had guided me through a blur of sensations: colors staining my eyes, sounds making my ears swivel, and the taste of moist greenery invading my mouth. This new world, it was beautiful. Nothing like where I came from.

But that was during the night, when all the noises and colors were muted. As the sun had risen I had told my sister to step back and follow me: the sun was my guide as the moon was hers. We trekked through a sea of green, watching as the sky over head turned blue, hearing as little creatures stirred in their burrows, and seeing these creatures peek out to stare at us with curious eyes. Many creatures actually came up to us, touched us. I guess my sister and I were different from the rest of them.

As I led my sister through what the creatures told me was called a forest, I didn’t know where I was heading. I had never before been to this world before, after all. But eventually my sister and I found what we had been searching for.

It first came to our attention as a rustle of leaves. We could tell immediately that this creature was different from the rest. It had to be what our creators had sent us to find. “A human,” I said to her. “My sister, he will guide us to our futures!”

We both stood quietly and patiently as the human neared us. The expression on his face was one of awe- my creator had told me that the humans here had never seen creatures like us before. Slowly he came right up to us and cautiously put a rope over each of our heads. We did not move in fear of scaring him away.

Eventually the human realized that we meant him no harm, and from then on he became less shy around us. He took the ropes around our necks in hand and started leading us through the forest. For a while nothing much happened. The forest stayed as the forest, and the only sounds were that of the leaves rustling and our footfalls. But eventually, I perceived a change. There was more sunlight, less trees- and there! An open field!

My sister saw it all too and drank it all in with me. This was all so new, so incredible! The human leading us realized that we had become more agitated.

“There now, fine creatures. It is merely a green field, nothing more. The building in the distance, that’s what you should be excited for! I do believe that will be your new home.”

It was true that there was a figure in the distance. As it loomed closer and closer my sister and I could appreciate that this mammoth structure was not one designed by our creators. No, this was made by the humans. What ingenuity! Eventually we stood in front of this marvelous creation of stone. Our human guide spoke to some other humans coated in metal, and two giant planks of wood in front of us were opened and we were led inside.

The inside of the structure did not disappoint. Candles blazed and rich red carpets covered the ground. In front of us stood two huge chairs, and sitting in each was a human dressed in colorful clothes. I sister snorted a little bit at their astonished expressions, but my sister immediately told me to be quiet. We did not need to make a bad impression upon these humans.

Our human guide stopped us right in front of the two others sitting in those fine chairs, and then stepped away as they stood up. The man that had been sitting in a chair walked up to me and said “You are a beautiful creature. I have heard of others of your kind… But none were described as being so noble. I am King Carlos V, and I will be your rider from now on, or once you grew bigger and taller.”

I could hear the queen speaking to my sister and making remarks of the same kind, yet I could not focus on such things as a shiver went up my spine. I looked up at Carlos, and without even knowing why, said “You are now bonded to me. I am now bonded to you. We shall forever stay together, in life and in death.”

Although Carlos could not understand my language, I think he understood what I meant. Slowly he put his arms around me, and we embraced.

Things would never be the same in the kingdom of Carlin.
